Feeling Stuck at Work? Here’s What to do
Feeling a little meh about your current role? Don’t worry, this is a totally normal feeling. It can be pretty unmotivating if you’re feeling stuck or lost in your role and that passion has just gone. However, this doesn’t have to be your reality! There are a few tips and tricks I have found over the years that can help shake the stale feeling; whether you’re wanting to breathe new life into your current role or potentially step in a new direction, here are a few of my top tips for firing up your career and finding the beautiful feeling of fulfilment and passion again.
Decide what your Values are
The Great Resignation has given all of us a much needed breather to actually sit still for a moment and reflect on what we actually want. How many hours a week do we want to work? What are your core values? Do you value a totally remote work environment, or do you crave the connection of being back in the office?
Don’t limit your thinking here. If you desire big things, now is the time to embrace that! My #1 value is freedom and so I started working for myself. It is the best thing I ever did, to be able to work a career where I feel free is complete fulfilment for me. If I can do it, so can you!
So sit down, and create a list of everything you have loved / not loved in all your roles. Once you know what you want, you can take steps and inspired actions to help you find the job that loves you back.
If you’re struggling with finding some values or need some inspo, Brene Brown has a great resource for you to use here.
2. Network, network, network some more
I’m sure you know the saying: “it’s not what you know, but who you know.” This rings particularly true when it comes to looking for new jobs! Networking is a fantastic way for you to connect with the right people. Network, network, and then some more. But don’t do this for the sake of saying you’ve done it. Inauthentic conversation is spotted a mile away.
Even if you meet someone who doesn’t seem like they are aligned with where you want to go currently, you never know where your path will take you. So give them respect. Truly connect with those you are talking to, find things out about them, and get to know them on a deeper level. This will help you to create a great rapport, which gives you credibility.
3. Find yourself a Mentor or Coach
The right mentor or colleague to elevate you is an invaluable asset! Whether it is a senior person in your career, who is where you want to go, or a colleague who will help you grow- there is such power in being surrounded by the right people.
Investing in a coach is also a great way to both find the right direction/redirection and boost your confidence. Having someone in your career corner can help you maybe go for a role you would not think you could obtain. But guess what? Maybe you’re the perfect candidate! So get yourself a coach, or a mentor, and see what doors open up for you.
With your coach, your mentor, or your colleague, don’t shy away from challenging conversations, always be curious, and always be in learning mode. You can learn things from your Mentor, your Coach, but also from a colleague you may not expect. You don’t know what you don’t know, so surround yourself with those you can teach you, and embrace the growth mindset.
4. Market Yourself Well
Now if after reflecting your thinking ok this is a sign for me to move on, we want to make sure you are setting yourself up for success. You are your own personal brand, be sure you market yourself well! This isn’t just your CV and Cover Letter, it’s your LinkedIn profile, trust me your LinkedIn Profile is incredibly important in your personal branding and even your social media- if your accounts are public your future employers might look for those! Be professional, but don’t get so caught up in putting a perfect foot forward that you don’t show who you truly are. You are more than a candidate for one role, you are an entire human being, who is amazing :)
Once you’ve gone through these four steps, how do you feel? Are you ready to kick back into gear at your current role, or is it time to jump aboard the Great Resignation and head in a new direction? Change can be daunting, and feel scary but my advice would be to lean into the feelings popping up, because the unknown and change are the most rewarding things you can do.
